Tips for How to Properly Light a Bathroom

Every room in your home should have adequate lighting, but one room in particular that really needs to have the lighting done right is the bathroom – especially since many bathrooms have a limited number of windows, if there are any windows at all.

Before we move forward, we’d like you to take a minute and think about the lighting in your bathroom right now – are you satisfied with how things look and feel? Or, do you think there’s room for improvement? If it’s time to make some changes, you’ve come to the right place; below, we’re sharing a few tips that we think can help.

  1. Have a strong, central source of light. Especially when natural light is scarce, you need a strong, central source of light in your bathroom so that your space is lit up both day and night. Depending on the layout of your bathroom this may mean recessed lighting, or, perhaps a single, larger light that hangs from the ceiling would work best. Either way, the key is to have lots of light pouring into your bathroom the second you flip on the first switch.
  2. Incorporate lighting for specific tasks. You use your bathroom for a lot of things, and if you can’t see what you’re doing, it would be pretty difficult to get things done! Ladies – how many times have you smeared makeup simply because you couldn’t see well when putting it on? That said, it’s important to also have lighting strategically placed throughout the bathroom to help you with specific tasks – lighting above your vanity mirror is the perfect place to start. Then, it’s also a good idea to add some lighting right above your shower, as it can get dark in there, especially if you have a dark shower curtain!
  3. Finish with accent lighting. Lastly, you should always have some accent lights installed to help set the mood. You don’t need to go crazy with this as you aren’t going to spend all day in the bathroom, but it’s certainly a nice touch and can make your home feel a lot cozier. And while you’re at it, don’t forget to add a nightlight or two for anyone who may get up frequently when it’s dark!

So, what ideas do you have to improve the lighting in your bathroom? While all lighting tasks should always be completed by a professional, it’s even more important to have bathroom lighting done by an electrician since water may get in the way.
